Moisturizer

Choose the Right One

Moisturizer is a crucial part of every skincare routine, but which kind is best for you? If you’re feeling overwhelmed in the product aisle, here are some guidelines to help narrow down your search and find the formula that’ll make your skin healthy and glowing. You might have been using the wrong moisturizer all along!

For Dry Skin

Tight and flaky skin will benefit greatly from a well-chosen moisturizer. Opt for a rich, oil-based or even petrolatum-based formula to keep your skin from being overly dry and cracked. Even if your skin is extra dry, use the product as directed. Using too much can clog your pores and lead to a blotchy complexion.

For Oily or Breakout-Prone Skin

It may seem counterproductive to use moisturizer on oily skin, but after cleansing and using acne products, you’ll need some added hydration. Look for a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer that is water-based and non-comedogenic (meaning, it won’t clog pores).

A moisturizer meant for oily skin will in fact help decrease the oil production in the epidermis.

Tip:

Apply moisturizer right after you shower or cleanse your face, as skin is more absorbent when damp.

For Normal Skin

If you’re lucky enough to have skin that isn’t overly dry or oily, using a water-based moisturizer will help maintain its balance. You might also consider going with a more lightweight option in the summer and a thicker cream in the winter.

A water-based moisturizer will have water listed as its first ingredient.

For Sensitive Skin

Those with sensitive skin will want to avoid moisturizers with fragrances, acids, and dyes, as these are potential allergens. Instead, opt for a moisturizer labeled “hypoallergenic” that has natural, soothing ingredients like aloe.

Tip:

Choose moisturizer that contains sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher so you’re sure to be protected daily.

For Mature Skin

Like dry skin, mature skin will benefit from a richer, oil-based or petrolatum-based moisturizer. However, if you’re looking for anti-aging properties too, pick one that also includes wrinkle-fighting alpha hydroxy acids and antioxidants like retinol, vitamin C, coenzyme Q10, tea extract, grape seed extract, and niacinamide.
